What size mud pump does a typical land rig need? 

Most standard land rig service runs on triplex pumps in the 1,000–1,600 HP class. Deep laterals and extended-reach horizontal programs move up into the 1,600–3,000 HP range, while workover and completion rigs typically run 350–750 HP units like the AMP-500. 

Can the same pump platform serve both shale drilling and workover rigs? Not typically at the same horsepower — shale laterals need the higher-HP triplex or quintuplex classes, while workover and completion service is better matched to a mid-range unit like the AMP-500. Standardizing on one manufacturer's platform across both, however, does simplify parts and training. 

How can operators reduce fluid-end downtime on high-utilization land rigs?
