Exploring Legacy, Innovation, and Precision Engineering in Mud Pump Technology

In April 2025, American Mud Pumps (AMP) hosted its first global webinar, titled "Built to Last: A Legacy that Solves Today’s Mud Pump Problems with Precision Engineering." Led by Director of Operations Mary Brinkman and Director of Engineering Jason Williams, the event spotlighted the history of mud pump innovation, the engineering legacy of the Williams family, and how precision technology is shaping the future of drilling operations.

A Legacy of Mud Pump Innovation

Few names in mud pump engineering carry as much industry weight as the Williams family. Their expertise has transformed drilling efficiency and reliability for over 80 years, beginning with Ellis Williams, who pioneered mud pump technology in 1942. His groundbreaking work influenced IDECO, EMSCO, and Skytop Brewster, ultimately leading to the development of LEWCO, a collaboration between LeTourneau and Ellis Williams Co., Inc.

Later, the family’s legacy continued with EWECO (Ellis-Williams Engineering Corporation), which was acquired by Weatherford International in 2008, setting new standards in durability and efficiency within the drilling industry.

Jason Williams: Leading the Next Generation of Innovation

As the grandson of Ellis Williams, Jason Williams has established himself as a leading expert in positive displacement piston pumps. Having apprenticed under both Ellis Williams and his father, Michael Williams, Jason has earned multiple engineering patents and is recognized for his development of the all-roller bearing continuous duty internal gear quintuplex mud pump, a game-changing advancement in mud pump technology.

Key Topics Explored During the Webinar

  • Costly failures caused by unreliable mud pumps

  • Hidden inefficiencies that drain drilling operations

  • Precision-engineered solutions to eliminate downtime and maximize productivity

  • Strategic decisions that impact drilling success in the long term

"The legacy of the Williams family continues to inspire innovation—our engineering advancements ensure a smarter, more efficient future for mud pump operations." – Jason Williams, Director of Engineering, American Mud Pumps
