Case No. RR-2503PD Rev1 | High-Performance Liner Study

In the demanding drilling fields of West Texas, uptime is critical. A globally recognized upstream operator sought to reduce liner-related downtime and maintenance costs on two high-output rigs. Their solution? American Mud Pumps’ RedRock® high-performance liners. The results were nothing short of revolutionary.

🔴 The Challenge: Frequent Changeouts, Rising Costs

Operating F-1600 Triplex Mud Pumps under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions, the operator faced frequent liner replacements:

  • Ceramic liners: ~2,500 hours

  • Steel liners: ~3,500 hours

These changeouts increased labor costs, logistical complexity, and non-productive time (NPT).

Objectives:

  • Extend liner life beyond 6,000 hours

  • Reduce maintenance frequency

  • Lower total cost of ownership

  • Maintain compatibility with existing infrastructure

🔴 The Solution: RedRock® High-Performance Liners

American Mud Pumps deployed its flagship RedRock® liners, engineered for extreme durability:

  • Inner Sleeve: >99.5% Ultrapure Zirconia + Yttria

  • Outer Shell: AISI 1045 Steel

  • Max Pressure: 7,500 psi

  • Max Temperature: 350°F

  • Sizes Available: 4-1/2” to 7”

Installed on F-1600 Triplex Mud Pumps, RedRock® liners were monitored over a full drilling cycle.

🔴 The Results: Performance That Redefines Expectations

RedRock® liners delivered an average of 7,200 hours of continuous operation, more than double the lifespan of ceramic liners and nearly triple that of steel.

Key Outcomes:

  • 106% Longer Service Life

  • 70% Fewer Changeouts

  • Zero Liner Failures

  • Up to 50% Cost Savings

Only one liner changeout was required during the entire 7,200-hour cycle dramatically improving uptime and reducing field crew interventions.

🔴 Technical Evaluation: Wear Analysis

A comparative study revealed:

  • RedRock® Zirconia: Full wear at 7,293 hours

  • Ceramic: Full wear at 3,597 hours

  • Steel: Full wear at 2,511 hours

RedRock® demonstrated superior resistance to abrasion and thermal stress, validating its performance in high-pressure drilling environments.

🔴 Strategic Impact: Fleet-Wide Upgrade

Following the success of the trial, the operator expanded RedRock® deployment across its fleet. The liners became a cornerstone of their operational strategy, delivering:

  • Fewer interventions

  • Reduced safety risks

  • Improved asset utilization
