1. Natural gas production is rising
According to the April Short-Term Energy Outlook, annual natural gas output in Eagle Ford is projected to grow from 6.8 Bcf/d in 2024 to 7.0 Bcf/d in 2026.
This increase is driven by higher natural gas prices and growing demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.
2. Oil output remains steady since 2020
In contrast, crude oil production has remained around 1.1 million barrels per day since 2020 and is expected to stay flat through 2026. This reflects the maturity and operational stability of oil wells in the region.
3. Rising gas-oil ratio explains the shift
As oil and gas extraction continues, reservoir pressure drops, which allows for more gas to flow relative to oil. This natural shift favors increased gas production in mixed-resource wells.
4. Eagle Ford remains the dominant field The Eagle Ford field accounts for:
73% of the region’s gas output (5.5 Bcf/d)
86% of the oil production (1.0 million b/d) Since 2020, gas production increased by 10%, while oil output declined by 4%.
5. Austin Chalk is the rising star of South Texas A field with roots nearly a century old, Austin Chalk has been booming since 2014. Today it produces:
1.8 Bcf/d of gas (23% of the region’s total)
125,000 b/d of oil (11%)
Since 2020:
Gas output nearly tripled (+1.1 Bcf/d)
Oil output rose 26% (+26,000 b/d) It’s the fastest-growing field in the region.
6. Market drivers behind the gas surge The increase in natural gas is backed by:
Rising international LNG demand
Export-ready infrastructure along the Gulf Coast
Energy transition policies favoring gas as a bridge fuel
7. Short-term outlook to 2026 Forecasts show the trend will continue:
More gas coming from mature, efficient wells
Stable oil output, due to focus on efficiency and plateauing production
