U.S. leads global LNG exports in 2024

The United States remained the world’s top exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2024, averaging 11.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), according to EIA.

Despite this lead, exports held steady compared to 2023 due to unplanned outages and limited capacity expansion.

Europe still a key market, but demand slipped

Europe (including Turkey) received 53% of U.S. LNG exports. However, exports to EU countries and the UK dropped by 24% as storage levels were high after a mild winter.

Only Turkey and Greece increased imports.

The Netherlands, France, and the UK were the top European buyers.

Germany, which began LNG imports in 2022, held steady at 0.6 Bcf/d but has started cutting regasification capacity in 2025.

Asian demand is rising

Asia's share grew from 26% in 2023 to 33% in 2024.

Japan, South Korea, India, and China made up 76% of the Asian total.

India showed the highest increase, with imports rising by 0.2 Bcf/d.

Latin America and MENA regions gain relevance

U.S. LNG exports to Latin America and the Middle East & North Africa grew to 14%, up from 8% in 2023.

Egypt, despite being a gas producer, resumed imports due to domestic shortages during peak summer.

Brazil and Colombia boosted imports as drought conditions cut hydroelectric output, raising gas demand.

What this means for the drilling industry

The stability of U.S. exports despite setbacks shows the resilience of the upstream and midstream sectors.

For drilling companies, this is a sign that global gas demand remains strong and diverse, requiring continued investment in reliable infrastructure and adaptive operations.
